Millions of girls in Tanzania are dis-empowered by the simple biological process of menstruation. Affordable and hygienic sanitary protection is not available to girls in many areas especially rural community. They resort to the use of unhygienic rags and cloths which puts them at the risk of infections.

Girls in Tanzania suffer from lack of adequate solutions to manage menstruation. Imported pads are prohibitively expensive for low-income families. Research conducted in Tanzania indicates that about 90 percent of the rural girls cannot afford off-the-shelf sanitary pads and instead improvise with materials such as grass, leaves, old papers, and pieces of cloth. These materials have limited absorbency and make it difficult for girls to participate in school during their periods.

Consequently, these Tanzanian female students are forced to skip classes at least five (5) to seven days (7) in a month (12 weeks a year) depending on an individual period days, this lead to poor performance in their school and different genital diseases. The failure of Tanzanian female students in primary and secondary schools in rural areas to have access to sanitary pads due to poverty leads them to skip classes for 12 weeks a year, this causes poor performance in their subjects.
